Applied Arts 2018 Photography Award Winner

I’m happy to announce that I won at this years Applied Art Photography & Illustrations Awards with my Melons, Sweet Heart and Fish Tale pieces. I won in the “Still Life – Series” category. If you get the chance make sure you grab a copy of the magazine or check out the other winners on their website as there is a lot of great work there.

Last time I won with my “Something Fishy” image. I guess I better shoot next years entry on pink as well.

New Personal Work – Pink

Happy to share these 3 new conceptual still life pieces. Heads up – they are a bit punny. Besides the humour this was a fun project where I got to play with some harder shadows for once, I’m quite a fan and have a few more similar ones in the works. Also there will be some great news about this series soon so keep an eye out;)

Fish Tale

An improbable, boastful tale, as in He came up with some fish tale about his winnings at the track. This expression alludes to the tendency of fishermen to exaggerate the size of their catch.

Promotional Work for Speakeasy Theatre

It’s been a little quiet on the blog here but I’m gonna try an catch up with some work over the next little while. First I want to share a promotional series I photographed for Speakeasy Theatres sold old show The Shipment directed by Kayvon Khoshkam and Omari Newton.

Featuring: Chris Francisque, Kiomi Pyke, Adrian Neblett, Andrew Creightney and Omari Newton

The New York Times says “Cultural images of black America are tweaked, pulled and twisted like Silly Putty in “The Shipment,” a subversive, seriously funny new theater piece”. Theatre Mania calls The Shipment “An insightful piece about black identity politics that is daring, provocative, and very, very funny.”

Biting satire at its very best, The Shipment is a subversive modern minstrel show about Black identity meant to wake the world to the ridiculous narratives in dominant media. Five Black actors play a roster of characters that reads like a bad b-list of Black iconography: Video Ho, Crackhead John, Bad Cop, Standup Comedian, Drug Dealer Mama, Grandma from Heaven, and Record Company Executive, to name just a few. The brazen mash-up of these stereotypes with clichés, distortions, and brilliant sleights of hand all force us to go beyond the lampoon and shift the lens through which we perceive race in order to confront our own bias.

Cop & A Half 2 – KeyArt – Universal Pictures

Photographed the key art for Universal Pictures Cop And A Half: New Recruit, it was a fun day working with the legendary Lou Diamond Phillips and the up-and-coming star Lulu Wilson. New Recruit is a sequel to the 1993 Cop and a Half with Burt Reynolds and Ruby Dee.

Grizzled veteran detective Mark Simmons (Lou Diamond Phillips) can’t seem to catch the “Badge Bandit” – the city’s serial prankster who’s causing mischief and embarrassing the police. Karina Foley (Lulu Wilson) is a spunky 12-year-old who dreams of being a cop. She stumbles on Simmons’ stakeout where she proves she’s got serious detective skills and tech-savvy smarts. While Simmons wants to ignore Karina, the police captain does the unthinkable and teams them up. While on their mission to stop the “Badge Bandit,” the unlikely duo goes on a hilarious, action-filled adventure!

As always it was a pleasure working alongside the local film folks. We shot the gallery out in Maple Ridge at The Ridge Studios.

Personal Work – TV

As you may know I have created a few more pieces that goes along with the concepts of my older Temptations series. Previously I’ve shared the pieces Gold  and Bacon. If you missed them you can check them out HERE and HERE.

temp·ta·tion
tem(p)ˈtāSHən/
noun
1. a desire to do something, esp. something wrong or unwise.

The one I’m sharing with you today is titled TV… for obvious reasons. This was also the first time I played with this background colour, quite like how it turned out. Enjoy!

Personal Work – Bacon

I have created a few more pieces that goes along with the concept of my older Temptations series. Previously I’ve shared Gold which you can check out HERE if you missed it.

temp·ta·tion
tem(p)ˈtāSHən/
noun
1. a desire to do something, esp. something wrong or unwise.

Keeping this definition in mind the conceptual Temptations series was created fixating on the negative lifestyle habits and addictions of humans around the world. Though the theme is dark the series is kept light-hearted, full of bright colours and carefully styled objects to match.

The one I’m sharing with you today is titled Bacon. Because we all love Bacon (except if you’re a vegan I suppose). Also, fun fact of the day:

  • I’m Danish. Bacon comes from pigs. For every Dane in the world there are more than 5 pigs in Denmark.

We are vastly outnumbered. So eat more bacon!

But watch out… (Especially if you don’t have free healthcare like those communists socialists from Denmark…)

Temptations Part II - Bacon - Conceptual still life photography from Vancouver photographer Jens Kristian Balle

You’re still here…
I’ll give you a second fun fact of the day: There are about 450000 calories worth of eatable meat/fat in a pig. With an average human daily calorie intake of 2250 there are enough pigs in Denmark to feed every Dane for more than a thousand days. That’s almost 3 years!**

**Calculated with rough school math by a creative person…

Bigger Fatter Liar – KeyArt – Universal Pictures

Had the pleasure of photographing the movie poster for Universal Picture Entertainments “Bigger Fatter Liar” by Ron Oliver with Jodelle Ferland,  Barry Bostwick and Ricky Garcia. It’s the sequel to the 2002 hit “Big Fat Liar” starring Frankie Muniz and Paul Giamatti. We were lucky to get to shoot the gallery at The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver, Canada.

Kevin Shepard is a tech-savvy young genius who uses his intelligence to slack off. When greedy video game executive Larry Wolf gets a hold of his ideas for a video game, Kevin and his best friend Becca set off for San Francisco to make Wolf’s life miserable through a series of pranks. – IMDB
